Marialice B.F.X. Curran, Ph.D.
As a mother, associate professor and connected educator, Dr. Marialice B.F.X. Curran is a pioneer in adolescent development and digital citizenship. The Founder and CEO of the Digital Citizenship Institute, she is responsible for mainstreaming the concept of digital citizenship and has flipped the script and changed the dialogue to include student voice as part of the solution. Her focus is action-based digital citizenship where students take an active role as digital leaders both on and out of the classroom.
Dr. Curran is recognized as a leading expert in digital citizenship and has presented nationally and internationally. As a keynote speaker, she shares her iCitizen Project research which highlights the importance of student voice in the safe, savvy and ethical use of technology. She believes that digital citizenship needs to be a verb and over the years has personalized learning for K-12 and college students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Since 2010 Dr. Curran has been focused on helping students to think and act at a local, global and digital level simultaneously. She developed and created the first all three-credit digital citizenship courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, provided K-12 professional development in the positive and practical use of social media and technology, and co-founded the digital citizenship (#digcit) chat on Twitter in 2011. Currently she serves on the leadership team as the Chair of the Digital Citizenship PLN through the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and is also the co-founder of the Digital Citizenship Summit.
Her call to action has been further inspired as she learns and mentors her ten-year old son. As a mother and son digital citizenship team they have presented at the Digital Citizenship Summit UK, co-moderated Twitter chats, spoke at TEDxYouthBHS and are hoping to inspire other parents, children and teens to follow their lead, Like Mother Like Son: Modeling Digital Citizenship.
The Digital Citizenship Institute is proud to announce that launch of DigCitKids, digital citizenship for kids by kids. DigCitKids is a K-12 student ambassador program and will be hosting monthly #digcit challenges to amplify student voice and student leaders around the world.
